Flea Season

Fleas are more than just itchy — they can cause skin infections, allergic reactions, and even transmit tapeworms. Because fleas can survive indoors year-round, prevention is essential in every season.

Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes and can cause life-threatening damage to the heart and lungs. Prevention is far safer and more affordable than treatment. Heartworm prevention is especially important for cats, for which no known heartworm cure exists.

We recommend Sentinel, which provides heartworm prevention along with protection against certain intestinal parasites.

Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms are common — and some can be transmitted to people. Many pets show no symptoms, making routine prevention and testing especially important.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through wildlife urine and contaminated water — especially common in areas with rain, snowmelt, and standing water (think: your favorite local dog park or trail walk). It can cause kidney and liver failure and is even transmissible to humans.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect your pet against leptospirosis in Western New York. 

In addition to parasite prevention, we recommend regionally appropriate vaccination against Lyme disease and leptospirosis to provide layered protection against the risks we see locally.
